SHAARE ZEDEK MEDICAL CENTER - FIGHTING HEART DISEASE IN ISRAEL

Heart disease is a well-known killer. Just one decade ago, the WHO (World Health Organization) released its findings showing that heart disease has become a global epidemic with approximately 17 million people dying each year from heart attack and stroke; at the time of publishing, this made up nearly one-third of deaths globally; and the WHO then prospected that this number would only rise with time.  Thankfully, medical research has produced some significant advances to combat this medical threat and continues to develop innovative methods to treat and prevent heart disease.  Not surprisingly, a number of these advances (and ongoing research) are coming from none other than Israel.  IsraCast went to Shaare Zedek Medical Hospital to learn more.

SUNNI ARAB STATES TAKE ON IRAN IN YEMEN

The flashpoint between Shiite and Sunni Islam has erupted in Yemen. After Shiite Iran armed Houthi rebels to the hilt, they have ousted the Sunni regime of Sunni President Abd Mansour Hadi. Neighboring Saudi Arabia has had enough. The Sunni regime in Riyadh has launched a major offensive into Yemen with 100 aircraft and an estimated 150,000 troops. Egypt has also dispatched troops, ships and aircraft to fight against the Shiite rebels in Yemen.

NETANYAHU & OBAMA CLASH IN CONGRESSIONAL SHOWDOWN

With the eyes and ears of the world focused on the U.S. Congress, Bibi Netanyahu railed at America's impending nuclear deal with Iran - Barack Obama was not impressed. The U.S. President said there was 'nothing new' in the Israel's leader's warning:

"We don't yet have a deal. But if we are successful, this will be the best deal possible with Iran to prevent Iran from having a nuclear weapon... On the core issue, which is how do we prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, which would make it far more dangerous and would give it scope for even greater action in the region, the prime minister didn't offer any viable alternatives."

WILL IRAN ACQUIRE A-BOMBS ON INSTALLMENT PLAN?

The fanatical Revolutionary Guards put on the show to reveal who is really calling the shots in Tehran. There is no way they are going to accept the dismantling of the nuclear weapons program. This, in the midst of the current nuclear talks in which President Obama, Secretary Kerry, and National Security Adviser Rice are turning over backwards trying to sell a nuclear deal - one that will enable the Ayatollahs to keep their uranium enrichment capability, and who knows what else, while the sanctions are gradually lifted. Then after a period of so many years the international inspection will expire. In other words, it opens this nuclear spectre: the Iranians are to act nice and later, if they haven't done so in the meantime, exploit their capability to 'break out' for nuclear weapons. It boils down to acquiring A-bombs on the installment plan! But after the 'Hollywood' sea pageant, Iran's President Hassan Rouhani and Foreign Minister Javad Zarif must have hit the roof. For months now they have been hard at work smiling their way to closing the deal.

Egypt’s War in the Sinai Peninsula: A Struggle that Goes beyond Egypt

Egypt is in the midst of a war that can be categorized as a low-intensity conflict. This category represents a common pattern of military campaigns in the early twenty-first century: sub-conventional wars fought by armies and security services belonging to states against armies of terrorilla- fully armed and hierarchical organizations that operate among civilian populations, combining guerilla and terror warfare tactics with the logic of terrorism. The civilians provide shelter and aid, whether under duress or in solidarity, and they always suffer the bitter consequences of the conflict.

YADLIN'S VISION FOR ISRAEL'S PEACE & SECURITY

The issues of security and economics are driving the current Israeli election campaign. Netanyahu and his ruling Likud party have the lead on security while Herzog and his Zionist Camp are coming on strong in the cost of living debate. However Amos Yadlin, Herzog's shadow defense minister, has just unveiled his approach, which is a far cry from Netanyahu's. In an interview with the Ynet website, Yadlin, a retired IDF general, pulled no punches in attacking Netanyahu and Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon.

FIREWORKS ON GOLAN HEIGHTS AND IN WASHINGTON

It is the IDF's biggest build-up along the Syrian-Lebanese frontier since the Second Lebanon war in 2006. And with very good reason; according to foreign reports, an Israeli rocket attack killed Jihad Mughniyeh, the son of the Hezbollah's former Chief of Staff and Iranian General Muhammad Allahdadi. Ten other Iranian and Hezbollah fighters also died in the targeted killing. Jihad was obviously out to avenge the mysterious assassination of his famous father, Imad, in Damascus in 2008. Since then Hezbollah has been biding its time, warning it will make Israel pay for the killing of Mughniyeh senior.

PALESTINIAN PRESIDENT'S DIPLOMATIC SHOCK TACTICS

Why did the UN Security Council reject a Palestinian resolution demanding Israel's unconditional withdrawal from all of the West Bank by the end of 2017? Clearly Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas should have realized there are limits to ganging up on Israel, even at the world body. Did Abbas imply get carried away with the built-in majority for the Palestinians in such bodies as the General assembly, and the Human Rights Council that spends most of its time bashing the Jewish State? The question is, why did Abbas persist in presenting the one-sided resolution when he could have waited until after the New Year when the new composition of the Security Council would probably have passed it with the nine member majority? Simply because he knew the U.S. would have cast its veto and killed the resolution anyway. So he chose not to annoy the U.S., and gained popularity points on the West Bank for making Israel sweat it out.

TURKEY COLLABORATES WITH ISIL & HAMAS

According to the Associated Press, the ISIL assault was launched by a suicide bomber driving an armored vehicle across the Turkish border:

"Beirut (AP): The Islamic State group launched an attack on the Syrian border town of Kobani - a first in the ongoing siege, a Kurdish official and activist said."

He was identified as Nawaf Khalil a spokesman for the Kurdish Democratic party. In Khalil's words:

"ISIL used to attack the town (of Kobani) from three sides. Today they are attacking from four sides."

There is no question that ISIL could not have launched the attack from across the Turkish border without the green light from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The Turkish Army has deployed a cordon of tanks along its border with Syria to bar Turkish volunteers from reaching Kobani, which has been under ISIL attack since September.

ISRAEL - DESPERATE SITUATION REQUIRES DESPERATE REMEDIES

This was the message from Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu, after two Palestinian terrorists, armed with a handgun and meat cleaver, ran into a Jerusalem synagogue and hacked and shot four Jewish worshippers to death and wounded eight other Israelis. This is what happened:

At approximately 7:AM, Jewish worshippers were in the middle of the early morning prayer of Shaharit at the Tehilat Yaakov synagogue in the religious neighborhood of Har Nof, when two young Palestinians drove up in their car, parked it nearby, and then ran unhindered into the synagogue. (Most public buildings in Israel have armed guards at the entrance but synagogues do not - no one thought that Palestinians would stoop to executing terror attacks on holy sites.) They immediately began shooting and hacking at the unsuspecting worshippers, who were already wrapped in their prayer shawls. Eyewitnesses later described how the killers moved from one victim to another, one terrorist was firing all the time, and the other was hacking victims with his big meat cleaver. All the while they were shouting 'Allah Akbar!'

KERRY TO THE RESCUE OF TEMPLE MOUNT

While there was sporadic Palestinian rioting elsewhere, U.S. Secretary John Kerry's mission to Amman has succeeded so far in dousing the flames that threatened to ignite a third Palestinian intifada (uprising). Credit where credit is due, and this time hats off to Kerry. Meeting first with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, and then together with Israel's Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu and Jordan's King Abdullah, Secretary Kerry was able to persuade the sides to take 'constructive steps, real steps, not rhetoric to de-escalate the situation'.

ANOTHER PALESTINIAN TERROR ATTACK IN JERUSALEM

Jerusalem: It was only a matter of time - a Palestinian terrorist has again driven his vehicle at high speed into Israelis at a crowded intersection in Jerusalem. One Israeli border policeman was killed and thirteen other people were injured, several of them seriously. After deliberately crashing into the Israelis near a light rail station, the terrorist jumped from his van wielding an iron bar and clubbed bystanders. More policemen arrived quickly to shoot dead the attacker. Hamas has claimed responsibility for what it termed "the heroic running over operation." The assailant has been identified as Ibrahim Akari, a thirty-five year old resident from the nearby Shuafat refugee camp. He was the brother of one of the terrorists released by Israel in exchange for the kidnapped Israeli soldier, Gilad Shalit. The brother, who had murdered another policeman, was banished from Israel to Turkey, where President Erdogan has reportedly permitted Hamas to set up shop.

"Chickenshit" Netanyahu & Iranian Nuclear Weapons Crisis

Above and beyond the startling headlines about a senior Obama official calling Netanyahu "chickenshit", there is the far more important revelation by reporter Jeffrey Goldberg in his latest expose in the Atlantic magazine. A second senior Obama official agreed Netanyahu was a chickenshit not only in the Palestinian peace process, but also on the Iranian nuclear threat:

"The Obama administration no longer believes that Netanyahu would launch a preemptive strike on Iran's nuclear facilities in order to keep the regime in Tehran from building an atomic arsenal. It's too late for him to do anything. Two, three years ago, this was a possibility. But ultimately, he couldn't bring himself to pull the trigger - it was a combination of our pressure and his own unwillingness to do anything dramatic. Now it's too late."

KERRY LINKS ISRAEL TO ISLAMIC STATE!

Returning home from the Cairo meeting to rebuild Gaza, the U.S. Secretary of State has hinted that Israel is partly to blame for the rise of Islamic State:

"There isn't a leader I met with in the region who didn't raise with me spontaneously the need to try and get peace between Israel and the Palestinians, because it was a cause for recruitment and street anger and agitation. People need to understand the connection of that, and it has something to do with humiliation, and denial, and absence of dignity."

NETANYAHU WARNS OBAMA ON ISIL-IRAN DEAL

Keep your eye on the Iranian ball! Don't win the war on ISIL and lose the war to a nuclear Iran! This was the most telling message in Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu's address to the UN General Assembly in New York. Obviously Israel's leader is worried about reports the US and the rest of the 5P+1 may offer Tehran an easing of the nuclear sanctions, if the Iranians join the coalition against Islamic State. He did not pull any punches:

'The Islamic Republic (Iran) is now trying to bamboozle its way to an agreement that will remove the sanctions it still faces, and leave it with the capacity of thousands of centrifuges to enrich uranium. This would effectively cement Iran's place as a threshold nuclear power. In the future, at a time of its choosing, Iran, the world's most dangerous state in the world's most dangerous region, would obtain the world's most dangerous weapons'.

OBAMA LEADING FROM THE COCKPIT

Alas, leading from behind will not work for US President Barack Obama in the Middle East. American jets are bombing and Tomahawk cruise missiles are blasting Islamic State ground forces and oil refineries in northern Syria and Iraq. After Gen. Martin Dempsey forewarned Obama that the air strikes on IS had better be serious or else he might have to recommend ground forces, the President got the message. Adding insult to injury, two of his former defense secretaries, Robert Gates and Leon Panetta, also castigated Obama for being too eager to withdraw US troops from Iraq, a move that has exacerbated the overall situation. With Saudi Arabia, Jordan, UAE, Bahrain and even Qatar joining Obama's invitation to follow his lead, Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron has now told the UN General Assembly that he's on board, as is Holland. The meltdown in Iraq and the civil war in Syria have spawned the IS juggernaut in those two former states and forced Obama to jettison his soft power, and switch to a harder foreign policy. This is how the US President described it in his address to the current session of the UN General Assembly in New York:

'The only language understood by killers like this (IS) is the language of force'.

OBAMA & HIS MUSLIM MANIACS

The historical irony is striking, on the thirteenth anniversary of 9/11, another U.S. President, Barack Obama, has been forced to declare total war on a new breed of Muslim maniacs. However, Obama is no George Bush, a ranting Republican hawk raring to take on al Qaeda. This time it was a dovish Democrat, who at the outset of his term, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his campaign promises - the judges in Oslo had discerned correctly that Obama would take a new approach in the Middle East and conclude America's wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. But the reality of fanatical Islam, far more savage than even al Qaida, has upset Obama's 'best laid plans'.

Egypt, IsraCast & Territorial Solution For Gaza

In Israel, the Galei Tzahal radio station has reported that al Sisi was willing to contribute 1,600 square kilometers of Sinai to expand Gaza five times its present size. The new territory, together with Gaza, would provide the Palestinians with a Palestinian state under control of the Palestinian Authority, which is headed by President Mahmoud Abbas. On August 6, 2005, the IsraCast website first reported on a land swap proposal for Sinai that was proposed by Prof. Yehoshua Ben Arieh. At that time, IsraCast sponsor, Avi Yaffe even raised the question at a private meeting with Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who expressed interest in the idea.

ISRAEL - LAND GRAB & ISIS & BAN KI-MOON'S SILENCE

Why in Jerusalem, did Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu annex another 1,000 acres of West Bank land, if he knew that in Washington, U.S. President Barack Obama would hit the roof? Indeed the annexation has thrown a monkey wrench into the already strained relations between the two allies after Obama, in effect, ordered Netanyahu to call a unilateral ceasefire, although Hamas was still launching rockets and mortars at Israel. The answer is that Netanyahu has been hauled over the coals in his own Likud party and the far Right for reigning in the IDF before it finished off the Hamas leadership and its forces, and therefore, he used the annexation to placate his Right wing supporters. But surely the national interest should trump domestic politics. On this score, Henry Kissinger's observation that 'Israel has no foreign policy, only domestic politics' does apply. However this generalization, like most others, is only partially correct.
