German Chancellor Angela Merkel has pledged her country's aid and friendship to Israel. Merkel wound up an eventful three day visit by addressing the Knesset and calling for stiffer sanctions to stop Tehran from developing nuclear weapons. Although several Knesset members boycotted Merkel's Knesset speech, the German leader was welcomed warmly by both government and opposition leaders.

The resolution, co-sponsored by 103 countries, comes on the heels of a December conference in Iran questioning whether the Holocaust really took place. The United States submitted the resolution on January 23rd and Canada, Australia, Israel, Turkey, Russia and the European Union lobbied to garner majority support for it. The resolution was passed by consensus, without a vote; Iran dismissed it as a political ploy.

Iran opened a conference on Monday to question whether the Holocaust ever took place, despite widespread condemnation by Western countries, including Germany. The conference will question whether gas chambers were used to exterminate six million Jews. The Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has repeatedly questioned the truth of the Holocaust, at one point describing the event as a "myth" and casting doubt on the scale of the killings.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has become the worlds leading denier of the Holocaust. In Jerusalem, Noah Flug, president of the Auschwitz International Committee, of former prisoners of Auschwitz has sent an invitation to the Iranian leader to visit the death camp to see for himself. Flug has also requested that the Iranian authorities allow him to participate in an upcoming conference on the Holocaust in Tehran. In our IsraCast studio, Noah Flug talked to David Essing about why he has sent his urgent letter to the Iranian president.
